Biochemical industry is one of the pillar industries in the 21st century. It is an interdisciplinary subject of biology, chemistry and engineering. It is a collective term for biochemical engineering and bioprocessing engineering. It is also a sub-discipline of biotechnology. It is also one of the frontier disciplines of chemical engineering. It is a means of transforming biotechnology into productivity and realizing industrialization and commodification. Biochemical products are mainly processed from animals, plants and microorganisms using biochemical engineering, physical and chemical methods. It is widely used in medicine, food, feed, basic organic chemical raw materials, organic acids, biological pesticides and other fields. The discipline of biochemistry began in the Second World War and was marked by the deep fermentation of antibiotics and the study of large-scale production techniques. From the late 1960s to the mid-1980s, the success of development and research in transgenic technology, biocatalysis and conversion technology, animal and plant cell culture technology, new bioreactors and new bioseparation technologies has brought the discipline into new development. During the period, the discipline system was gradually improved. In the late 20th century, with the rapid rise of high technology represented by genetic engineering, it opened up new areas for the further development of this discipline. At present, biochemical products are involved in a wide range of fields such as medical and health, agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry and fishery, light industrial food, chemical energy and environment. It plays a very important role in promoting the transformation of traditional industries and the formation of emerging industries, and has a profound and revolutionary impact on human society. As of 2011, the annual sales of bio-high-tech products in the world reached US$112.93 billion, which has great economic potential. At the same time, as human beings become more and more strict with the environment, biochemical products are increasingly favored by people. Therefore, bio-chemical industry has also aroused the interest of governments and scientific and technological personnel in various countries, and has become a hot spot in the world's high-tech competition. Its development level has become a symbol of a country's scientific and technological strength, especially with the rapid development of life sciences, people need more and more biological high-tech products. It is predicted that in the next ten years, the bio-technical industry in developed countries such as the US and Europe will increase by 10 to 20 times, and the corresponding bio-chemical products will also increase rapidly.
