The use of an oxazoline to mask a carboxyl group is described. Since the oxazoline moiety is inert to Grignard reagents and lithium aluminum hydride, this technique serves as a novel means to elaborate or functionalize carboxylic acid derivatives. The carboxyl function may be masked either as its acid or ester derivative under generally mild conditions.
