Abstract

Vilsmeier reagents such as N-methyl-N-phenylchloroiminium chloride are readily deprotonated by tert-amines even in POCl3 solution. The resulting transient intermediates, aminochlorocarbenes, are nucleophilic (ie umpoled Vilsmeier reagents) and are trapped with electrophiles.
