Abstract

Alkylaryl compounds are metalated either in the ring or on the alpha carbon of the side chain. If the metal enters the ring, the product can function as a catalyst for the polymerization of butadiene in the same way as did phenylsodium. a If it enters the side chain it can function as the Alfin catalyst4 with sodium isopropoxide, provided that a double bond in the benzene ring can serve in place of the double bond in the olefin.
