Abstract

In the course of the preparation of large amounts of diethyl-t-butylcarbinol, it was found that while ethylmagnesium bromide reacted with trimethylacetyl chloride to give 26% of this tertiary alcohol and GO% of the secondary alcohol, ethyl-t-butylcarbinol, the same reagent reacted with methyl trimethylacetate to give 78.5% of the tertiary alcohol and only 8.6% of the secondary alcohol.
