The tert-butylsulfonyl group has been shown to be an excellent director of ortholithiation, making ortho-substituted aryl tert-butyl sulfones very readily available.' The use of such molecules to the synthetic chemist would be enhanced if the sulfonyl group could subsequently be transformed into another substituent.
