The p-methoxybenzyloxycarbonyl(pMZ-) group1, 2) has been widely used as a blocking substituent of the amino moiety of amino acids in peptide synthesis. In the present investigation, it was found that pMZ-amino acids were prepared directly from a number of amino acids and pmethoxybenzyl chloroformate3, 4)(I) under the conditions of the Schotten- Baumann reaction.
