It has been shown that the reactions of carbenes or carbenoids generated from α-diazo carbonyl compounds with the C S bonds of thiocarbonyl compounds initially proceeds with the formation of thiocarbonyl ylides, which subsequently undergo 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition or electrocyclic ring closure to give thiiranes followed by extrusion of sulfur leading to α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds.
