Classical methods for the synthesis of trifluoromethylated aromatics come from the beginning of this century. Indeed, Swarts discovered that antimony trifluoride could be used to convert benzotrichloride into benzotrifluoride. 6 Later, it was found that hydrogen fluoride could also fluorinate benzotrichloride to yield the trifluoride. 7 These methods are still used today, but have a number of disadvantages relating to the harsh conditions they impose and their toxicity.
