Abstract

• Lipopolysaccharide down-regulates hepatocyte mitochondrial aquaporin-8 expression. • Lipopolysaccharide decreases mitochondrial ammonia diffusional permeability. • Lipopolysaccharide impairs hepatocyte ureagenesis from ammonia. • A role for aquaporin-8 in defective hepatic ammonia removal in sepsis is suggested.
