Abstract

In a study of the reaction of alkyl benzoates with sodium alkoxides 'it was found that the isopropyl ester yielded, among other products, benzoylacetone and dibenzoylmethane. The formation of these 1, 3-diketones was thought to be the result of three consecutive reactions, viz.,(a) a reverse Tischtschenko reaction through which the isopropyl benzoate under the influence of the alkoxide broke into benzaldehyde and acetone,(b) the condensation of ...
