Abstract

Highlights ► Exercise does not reliably alter anxiety-like and defensive behaviors at baseline. ► Anxiolytic potential of exercise emerges after mild-to-moderate intensity stress. ► Locus coeruleus galanin is elevated by exercise and correlates with wheel running. ► A role for galanin in the beneficial consequences of wheel running is supported.
