Background: IcmF is a fusion between a coenzyme B 12-dependent isobutyryl-CoA/n-butyryl- CoA isomerase and a G-protein chaperone. Results: IcmF also isomerizes isovaleryl-CoA to pivalyl-CoA and is partially protected from inactivation in the presence of GTP. Conclusion: The isovaleryl-CoA mutase activity of IcmF might be important in leucine catabolism where isovaleric acid is an intermediate.
