Abstract

The reaction between HC1 and C1ONOz is potentially a very important component of stratospheric chemistry.'The reactants are the two most abundant temporary chlorine- reservoir species, and the net effect of the reaction is to return chlorine to its active form as a catalyst for ozone destruction, since the product Clz photolyzes rapidly in the stratosphere yielding free chlorine atoms:
