Abstract

The direct addition of ammonia and amines to olefinic hydrocarbons is potentially a very useful reaction in synthetic chemistry, but an efficient method for accomplishing this addition has not been known. It has now been found that ammonia and primary and secondary amines add readily to the lower olefins in the presence of alkali metals or their hydrides as catalysts at temperatures of 175-200" and at pressures above about 400 atm.
