Abstract

In quaternary ammonium salts nitrogen has usually been considered as having a valence of five but it has also been recognized that the fifth valence is of a type different from the other four. The older ideas concerning the stereochemistry of quinquivalent nitrogen as advanced by Van't H~ ff,~ Willgerodt3 and Bischoff4 predicted many isomers that have never been obtained experimentally.
