Abstract: The rates of solvolysis of 1-aryl-I-(trifluoromethy1) ethyl tosylates 1b-i and 1-aryl-1- (trifluoromethyl) ethyl bromides 3a, b in 80% ethanol, and of 1-phenyl-and l-(3-chlorophenyl)- 1-(trifluoromethyl) ethyl tosylates (le and lg) in a variety of solvents, were measured. Linear MYOTs plots with m= 1.09 for le and m= 1.03 for lg were observed. These and the very high tosylate/bromide rate ratio, 3.94 X lo4, for 1-(4-methylphenyl) derivatives lb vs. 3b indicate ...
