Abstract

The m-nitrophenylsulfonoxylation of met'hyl benzoate, nitrobenzene, bromobenzene, and anisole follows the familiar pattern of orientation and activation or deactivation influences appropriate to an electrophilic substitution. The khr/kB's determined by competitive reactions (and by direct kinet'ics) are, respectively, met, hyl benzoate, 8.3 X 10+(10.6 X nitrobenzene, 2.4 X lo+; bromobenzene, 0.47 (0.56); anisole, 7.0 x 103 (7.5 X lo3).
