Abstract

The single electron transfer reagent SmI 2 , introduced in organic chemistry by Kagan, 7 has become a popular reagent for selective radical coupling reactions and reduction reactions. 8 In pioneering experiments, reported by Zhang and Lin in 1987, it was observed that nitrobenzene was reduced to aniline using SmI 2 and methanol in almost quantitative yield at room temperature. 9 More recently, Banik et al. reported the use of SmI 2 for the reduction of ...
