We report a new, high yield, single vessel synthesis of the general anesthetic sevoflurane. The new synthesis consists of a two-stage fluoromethylation of hexafluoroisopropanol. In the first stage, hexafluoroisopropanol is chloromethylated using aluminum trichloride and trioxane.
