Abstract

Chlorine dioxide reduction to chlorite by Fe (aq) 2+ proceeds via both outer-sphere and inner-sphere electron-transfer pathways. The outer-sphere path is dominant (86%). The inner-sphere pathway (14%) proceeds through the formation of an inner-sphere (FeIII (ClO2- )(H2O) 5) 2+ complex.
