RECEIVED NOVEMBER 19, 1923 The nitrites of aromatic primary amines lose one molecule of water to give diazohydrates which according to Hantzsch2 give diazonium salts with acids through tautomeric change. The nitrites of aliphatic primary amines give by the loss of two molecules of water the diazo compound as the first isolable decomposition product which still contains the nitrogen of the amine.
