Abstract Treatment of the salt CF 3 C CLi (3) with the aldehydes RCH 2 CHO (R H and Ph) affordsthe secondary alcohols CF 3 C CCHROH (1a) R Me and (1b) R CH 2 Ph. Alcohol 1adoes not give the corresponding ketone on attempted oxidation (pyridinium chlorochromateor Na 2 Cr 2 O 7/H 2 SO 4), but alcohol 1b is oxidized to the diketone (CF 3 C CCOCHPh) 2 (7)(41%) by active MnO 2.
