Methyl (methylthio) methyl sulfoxide was found to react with benzaldehyde in the presence of benzyl tri-methylammonium hydroxide (Triton B), sodium hydroxide, or potassium hydroxide, affording 1-(methylsulfinyl) 1-(methylthio)-2-phenylethylene.
