In order to account for the products formed when strong acids add to derivatives of ethylene, investigators have proposed different hypotheses. Markownikoff* many years ago laid down the rule that when hydrogen bromide or other similar compound adds, the negative atom goes to that unsaturated carbon atom which is joined to the larger number of other carbon atoms.
