One of the most important properties of hydrazine and its organic sub- stitution products is their capacity to react with the carbonyl group of ketones and aldehydes, forming hydrazones or azines by elimination of water. This reaction takes place most generally in neutral or alkaline solution, while in acid the product is to a greater or less extent, depending on the particular components, hydrolyzed.
