Epilepsy is a chronic, often lifelong, neurological disorder that affects ∼1% of the population worldwide and which is characterized by recurrent involuntary seizures, caused by disturbances in the normal electrical activity of the brain. Epilepsy has a tremendous impact, not only on the individuals afflicted with this disease but also on their families as well as on society in general, because of the resultant personal and financial burden.
