Abstract The Heck arylation of maleic anhydrides using arenediazonium tetrafluoroborates was investigated. Symmetrical and unsymmetrical 3, 4-diarylmaleic anhydrides, some of them showing interesting fluorescent properties, were prepared in one or two steps from cheap and commercially available maleic anhydride.
