Br Br Br the direction of the pseudo-acid maxima in the region 210-220 mp are characteristic of a, P-unsaturated lactones.* Apparently the ionic form of the acid is also derived from the cyclic structure since the aqueous solutions are strongly acidic and spectra of alkaline solutions show only a slight decrease of absorption at 220 mp III with production of a plateau in the region 270-290 rnp.
