Summary It has been found that the first step in the oxidation of anthracene with lead tetraacetate consists in the addition of acetoxyl groups to the two meso positions to give a mixture of the cis and trans isomers. Both substances lose acetic acid readily and yield 9- acetoxyanthracene, and this substance on further oxidation again adds two acetoxyl groups to give an intermediate that easily loses acetic anhydride to yield oxanthrone acetate.
