Studies directed at a synthesis of the morphine alkaloids by photocyclization of aryl vinyl ethers (eg, AB) has resulted in preparation of representatives of the trans-morphine ring system; eg, 49, 51, and 52. Photocyclization substrates la-c, 25a-e, and 33a-d are prepared by reaction of the appropriate substituted phenol with epoxy ketones of type 8 or by annelation of 4-oxopiperidines with (ary1oxy) methyl vinyl ketones of type 30. ...
