Use of VigabatrinVigabatrin, also known as gamma-vinyl-GABA, is an antiepileptic drug that inhibits the breakdown of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) by acting as a suicide inhibitor of GABA transaminase (GABA-T). It is a structural analog of GABA, but does not bind to GABA receptors. Vigabatrin is an irreversible suicide inhibitor of gamma-aminobutyric acid transaminase (GABA-T), the enzyme responsible for the catabolism of GABA, which increases the level of GABA in the brain. Vigabatrin is a racemic compound, and its [S]-enantiomer is pharmacologically active. |

Cerebellar fastigial nuclear GABAergic projections to the hypothalamus modulate immune function.
Brain. Behav. Immun. 27(1) , 80-90, (2013) Our previous work has shown that the cerebellar fastigial nucleus (FN) is involved in modulation of lymphocyte function. Herein, we investigated effect of FN γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-ergic projectio... |

Vigabatrin versus carbamazepine monotherapy for epilepsy.
Cochrane Database Syst. Rev. 1 , CD008781, (2012) The efficacy and safety of vigabatrin (VGB) as an add-on therapy for refractory epilepsy has been well established. However, this needs to be weighed against the risk of the development of visual fiel... |
