Abstract
A series of 9-R-9, lO-dihydrophenanthrenes [R= CH3, CN, C (CH3) 3, COCH3, C02CH3, C02CH2CH3, OH, Si (CH&] as well as two related 5, 6-dihydrochrysenes, are studied by NMR analysis of the three spin Hg, Hlo, Hl, y system. The coupling constants thus obtained are then used to determine the conformational preferences of these mobile ring systems with regard to the location of substituents in pseudoaxial or pseudoequatorial positions.
