Summary This study highlights the importance of a tightly packed crystalline surface phase for the onset of detectable chiral molecular recognition between enantiomers in monolayer films. The II/A isotherms and surface shear viscosities indicate that there are only scant differences between the ionized films cast from solutions of enantiomeric and racemic stearoyltyrosine.
