Abstract
In the literature numerous methods are mentioned for the synthesis of 4-hydroxycoumarins substituted by an alkyl or an aryl group at the 3-position. Many of these procedures and products are protected by patents. The syntheses can be divided into two groups. The first group comprises all syntheses in which the formation of the hetero ring struc- ture is the final reaction; the second group comprises all syntheses in which unsubstituted 4-hydroxycoumarin is the starting material.
