Abstract
Nornicotine is a nicotine metabolite that serves as a precursor in the formation of N′-nitrosonornicotine, a compound shown to be carcinogenic in numerous animal studies. Knocking out the function of all known tobacco N-demethylase genes through targeted mutagenesis is an effective strategy for minimizing the nornicotine content of tobacco.
