Abstract
The Friedel-Crafts acylation is a very useful method for the preparation of ketones in the benzenoid series. However, it is of no value for diazaaromatic compounds. Pyrazines are particularly unsuited to direct substitution by electrophilic reagents due to the inductive effect of the ring nitrogen atoms and to resonating structures causing a positive charge on the ring carbon atoms [l].
