Abstract

Abstract Heating α-acetylbenzyl cyanide I with a mixture of acetic acid and sulphuric acid leads to the formation of the α-pyridone IV, formed by condensation of the amide II with the ketone III, both of which originate from the cyanide I (see scheme 1). A similar reaction has been observed with some other α-acylbenzyl cyanides.
