Abstract
Abstract Cyclooctene reacts with CO 2 on the (Lig) Ni 0-system I [Lig=(c C 6 H 11) 2 PCH 2 CH 2-2-Pyridyl] to form the bicyclic complex IV containing a five-membered ring unit. Protonolysis of these complex with Et 2 O/HCl yields quantitatively cyclooctyl carboxylic acid V, while treatment with dilute inorganic acids causes a sequence of reactions to occur which lead to the formation of β-γ-unsaturated cyclooctenyl carboxylic acid VI (92%).
