Abstract

It is generally accepted1p2 that singlet carbenes insert into the 0-H bond of alcohols rather than the CH bonds to give ethers while triplet carbenes abstract hydrogen from the CH bonds of alcohols to give radical pairs which in turn undergo dimerization or abstraction of a second hydrogen atom.
