Abstract

Abstract: Dissolving (E)-@-nitrostyrene in trifluoromethanesulfonic acid (TFSA) resulted in a stable orange-colored solution. Quenching the solution with water quantitatively yielded the starting@-nitrostyrene. The nature of the chemical entity in the TFSA solution was deduced from the results of cryoscopy and NMR spectroscopy.
