Abstract

The preparation of a wide variety of oxaziranes by oxidation of the appropriate imine with peracetic acid is discussed. These compounds represent a previously unknown heterocycle, a carbon-nitrogen-oxygen three-membered ring. The evidence for assignment of this structure is reviewed, and a general survey is made of some of the reactions characteristic of oxaziranes.
