Abstract: The four ketones@-(0-tolyl)-and@-mesitylpropiophenone and-isobutyrophenone all undergo photocyclization to 2-tetralols via triplet-state c-hydrogen abstraction, The intermediate 1, 6-biradicals cyclize in 100% efficiency. The triplets react in very low quantum efficiency; rate constants for t-hydrogen abstraction must compete with rapid (IO9 sI) CT quenching by the@-aryl group and range from< 3 X lo4 for P-(0-to1yl) propiophenone to 3 ...
