Abstract
2-Methoxythiophene was obtained by a copper-catalyzed Williamson synthesis. The ether function was found to overcome appreciably the directive influence of the hetero-atom in orienting some attack by electrophilic reagents on the 3-position; radical reagents reacted only with the 5-position. The readily available 5-methoxy-2-thienyllithium is a convenient material for the introduction of the 5-alkoxy-2-thienyl group into a molecule. A modification ...
