Abstract

Formation and decay of cations of solute n-alkanes (nC,-nC,,) are investigated at 77 K by a combined optical method with ESR method. It is found that both the trapped electron (e;) and the n-octane cation (n-C8+) form in polycrystalline n-pentane (n-Cs) matrix containing n-C8 and that the e; is scavenged by added I-chloropentane (l-CICs) to form pentyl radicals (RCH,'). n-Hexane containing n-Cs and l-CICs produced fl-C8+ and RCH,'.
