Abstract
Although some partially reduced benzpyrenes have been prepared by indirect synthesis, no direct catalytic hydrogenation of 3, 4-benzpyrene seems to have been carried out. We became interested in this process because of the occurrence of hydrogenated polycyclic hydrocarbons in some natural tars, a report on which will appear elsewhere. Ia At room temperature and in the presence of platinum oxide the complete saturation of 3, 4-
