Abstract

p-Nitrobenzaldehyde is observed to photoisomerize cleanly to p-nitrosobenzoic acid in aqueous solutions but to be photostable in pure acetonitrile or acetic acid. The dimethyl acetal of p-nitrobenzaldehyde is photostable in water. The quantum yield (0.034 at 254 nm in 99% HzO/l% CH3CN) depends upon the water concentration in mixtures of acetonitrile and water but is unaffected by pH in the range of 0-10, by the concentration of starting ...
