Abstract

Abstract Terephthalic acid reacts with alkyl halides under Birch conditions to substituted 1, 4- cyclohexadienes in high yields and good stereoselectivities. Electrophiles containing ester or nitrile groups undergo a surprising fragmentation under the reaction conditions.
