Abstract

We report evidence for the long sought after methylenedialkyloxonium ylides from methyloxonium ions by two independent routes, proving their intermediate formation through derived product analysis. Reaction of trimethyloxonium salts with sodium hydride results in competing proton abstraction besides methane formation (hydride methylation).
