Abstract
In contrast to 8-benzhydryl-l-naphthoyl chloride, which isomerizes with 1, 5-phenyl migration under Friedel-Crafts conditions, Zbenzhydrylphenylacetyl chloride cyclizes to a seven- membered cyclic ketone (IV) in the presence of aluminum or stannic chloride. When heated with a mixture of acetic acid and polyphosphoric acid both Zbenzhydrylphenylacetic acid and ketone IV afford a substituted Ppyrone (VI) in good yield.
